Whittier College is a private liberal arts college in Whittier, which is a city located in Los Angeles County, in the US state of California, with a population estimated at a number of more than 83 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Whittier College was established in 1887 and it currently has an enrollment of more than 1500 students. It's founders were members of the Religious Society of Friends, and its establishment was made possible thanks to the generosity and efforts of local business leaders, Washington Hadley and Aubrey Wardman.
It is known today as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, serving students of all ethnicities, and geographical and socio-economic backgrounds. It offers its students over 30 majors and 30 minors, in 23 areas of study, its liberal arts curriculum setting high emphasis on interdisciplinary learning.
The athletics teams from Whittier College are known as The Poets, which compete in NCAA Division III, in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), in men's and women's sports, which include basketball, football, soccer, diving, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold and their mascot is known as Johnny Poet.
Whittier's rich list of notable alumni contains resonant names, such as: former US President Richard Nixon, California State Senator Tony Strickland, actor George Stults (`7th Heaven`), former CFO of Apple Computer Fred D. Anderson, and U.S. Navy physician who established the U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute, Albert R. Behnke, among others.
